On this page: what your character is like at the start, which vocation to pick, how to change your look and what to do in the Ashport tutorial.
Your character
Every character has a name, a sex and a vocation. The vocation is the most important choice: it decides how you fight. You can have several characters on the same account and switch between them from the character list.
In the works: today the accounts and characters for test players are created by the game team, who send you your username and password. A simpler sign-up is being prepared.
Choose your vocation
There are four. They are the classic MMO ones, with simpler names.
| Vocation | How it plays | Pick it if… |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Steel and shield, always in the front row. Soaks up a lot of damage. | You want to fight up close and protect the party. |
| Archer | Bow or spear. Hits hard from afar and moves fast. | You like attacking at range and running away in time. |
| Mage | Fire and energy. Huge damage, but fragile. | You want the highest damage and do not mind watching your mana. |
| Shaman | Ice, earth and healing. Heals the party and still bites. | You want to support your friends or summon beasts. |
You start with the gear and supplies of your vocation (armor, weapon, potions, a rope, a shovel and some food).
Do not worry, it is not forever: at level 20 you pick one of the two subclasses of your vocation (for example, the Warrior becomes a Guardian or a Berserker) and you can change it for free whenever you want. See Your character.
Your first moment in the game
You appear on the Ashport pier, at level 8. Next to you is Captain Iria Salobre: the first NPC with a
yellow ! above her head. That sign means “I have a quest for you”.
Things worth knowing from second one:
- Nobody can attack you until level 24 (and you cannot attack other players). You can learn in peace.
- The temple of Ashport is where you return if you die.
- Press F1 to see the list of every key. See Controls and hotkeys.
- To talk to someone, click on them: your character walks to the NPC and their window opens.
Customize your look (T key)
All characters use the game’s own bodies and you can change your look whenever you want, for free.
- Press T (or right-click your character and choose “Customise Character”).
- On the left pick the category. For your body: Body, Skin, Hairstyle, Hair color, Beard and Clothes. For your outfit: Head, Torso and Back (plus Equipment, which shows the weapon and shield you carry).
- On the right you see the options with thumbnails and color palettes (under Body, for example, you pick male or female and one of three builds: athletic, stocky or slim). Your character is shown large in the middle and you can turn it with the arrow keys.
- Press Save. Every player sees your new look instantly. Cancel leaves everything as it was. Outfit pieces (helmets, tunics, hoods, capes, backpacks…) are cosmetic only: they do not change your defenses. Each one belongs to a vocation and unlocks in one way: by level, by a quest or by an achievement. The ones you cannot use yet look dark with a padlock, and touching them tells you how to get them. When you unlock one, the game lets you know. Your character starts dressed in the torso of their vocation.
Careful: the weapon and shield you see on your character are the ones you have equipped. If you change weapon, what you see changes too.
The tutorial: the first five quests
The guided start is five short quests. They teach you the basics and end with your first dungeon. It takes about 15 minutes.
| # | Quest | What you do | What you learn |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Last Ship | Talk to Captain Iria and go to the Chapel of the Tide to see Mother Odila. | How to talk to NPCs and where the temple is. |
| 2 | Delver’s Kit | Mother Odila sends you to Nerea the Distiller, who gives you your first potions. | How to buy and sell with one click. |
| 3 | Rats in the Exchange | Nerea asks you to clear the Exchange cellar: six rats. The last one drops an embroidered handkerchief. | Your first fight (a tip appears for your vocation). |
| 4 | The Thief and the Embroidery | Take the handkerchief to Lady Aludra, in the Alley of Nets. She gives you her lockpick. | How access to a dungeon is earned. |
| 5 | Rat Tracks | Go down to Aludra’s Warren, beat the Mother Rat and return to Aludra. | Your first dungeon. |
At the end you get the Rat Shard (the first point of the broken crown), the “First Blood” achievement with the
Delver title, plenty of experience and gold. And Lord Fordo is already waiting for you with a yellow !: the
main story begins.
You can do the Warren alone or with up to three friends: monster health adjusts to how many you are. On Normal it is a short version (two floors and the boss lair). More in Dungeons.
Tip: when you are unsure what to do, open the quest log with L. It tells you who to talk to and where. See Quests.
