On this page: how to move, how to use the chat, which key opens each window and how to use the action bar.
Rift Delve is played like a modern MMO: almost every window has one letter that opens and closes it. The rule that surprises veteran MMO players most is this: the chat starts closed, so the letters on your keyboard are hotkeys and do not type anything until you press Enter.
The bare minimum
| I want to… | I press… |
|---|---|
| Walk | W A S D, the arrow keys, or click on the ground. |
| Walk diagonally | Q Z C, or two letters at once (W+D = north-east) |
| Loot the corpses next to you | E (like PokeXGames). Shift + E: options (auto-loot on kill and what to loot) |
| Turn without walking | Ctrl + W A S D |
| Type in the chat | Enter. Type, then press Enter again to send. |
| Close the chat without sending | Esc |
| See every key | F1 |
| Close the top window | Esc (one at a time) |
| Open the game menu | Esc (when nothing is open) |
| Move and change your bars and the HUD | Ctrl + Shift + E (see Customize your interface) |
| Use an ability | Keys 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - = (the action bar) |
| Talk to an NPC | One click on them |
The chat: Enter opens, Enter sends
- Press Enter: the chat line opens with the cursor already in it.
- Type your message.
- Press Enter again: it is sent and the chat closes. If you typed nothing, Enter just closes it.
- Changed your mind? Esc closes it and erases what you typed.
While you type, no hotkey fires and W A S D does not move you, so you can type “wasd” or “hello” without your character running off. The arrow keys do walk, even with the chat open.
Tip: you almost never need the chat to play. You talk to NPCs with a click and nearly everything is done with buttons.
One letter per window
Each letter opens the window and the same letter closes it. If you hover a button in the bottom menu, its letter shows in the tooltip (for example, “Character and stats [P]”).
| Key | Opens… | Explained in |
|---|---|---|
| P | Character and stats | Your character |
| I | Backpack | Items |
| N | Talent tree | Your character |
| B | Ability book | Your character |
| T | Appearance (customize) | First steps |
| K | Ark and Altar | Economy |
| L | Quest log | Quests |
| U | Quest bag | Quests |
| J | Contracts and diary | Quests |
| F | Dungeon finder | Dungeons |
| H | Party | Dungeons |
| G | Guild | Guild, season and relics |
| V | Island events | Guild, season and relics |
| R | Season relics | Guild, season and relics |
| Y | Season rankings | Guild, season and relics |
| M | World map | Quests |
| O | Friends | - |
| X | Battle list | Combat |
| F1 | Controls | this page |
| Ctrl + L | Log out | - |
The old Alt hotkeys (like Alt+C or Alt+K) still work as aliases.
The action bar (1 to 0)
At the bottom of the screen there is an action bar with 12 slots. The first time you log in it is already set up with the keys 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - =.
- When you unlock an ability in the talent tree, it shows up by itself in the first free slot.
- You use it with one click or with the slot key. You do not have to type magic words (although you can, as in classic MMOs).
- To change a slot: right-click it and choose “assign key”. You can also drag an ability from the book (B).
Esc, the wild card
Esc does one thing at a time, in this order: it closes the chat; if you are attacking or following someone, it stops; it closes the topmost window; and if nothing is open, it opens the game menu (Back to game, Controls, Options, Log out and Exit).
Changing the keys
- Open Options > Controls > General Hotkeys (or use the “Change keys” button in the F1 window).
- Pick the Chat Mode Off mode and the “Rift Delve” category.
- The Primary column is the letter and Secondary is the Alt alias.
Prefer an always-open chat, like classic MMOs? In Options > Controls untick “Enter to disable chat” and press the “Chat Off/On” button in the console.
