On this page: where you can fight other players, what skulls are and what happens when you die.
Protection zones
Rift Delve is an open PvP world: outside protection zones, other players can attack you (and you them). The protection zones are few on purpose. Inside them nobody can attack anybody:
- the temple,
- the depot (where the bank and the Ark are),
- and the houses.
The rest of the world, even the city streets, is PvP territory. While you are in a protection zone, your status bar shows an icon that says so.
To start in peace: nobody can attack you until level 24, and you cannot attack others either. The protection ends by itself when you reach level 25.
The Rift, the center of the island, is the war zone between Ashport and Ironhold.
Remember: if you fight someone, the game locks the protection zone for 60 seconds: you cannot hide in the temple in the middle of a fight.
Skulls
Skulls tell you who attacks without a reason. They appear next to a player’s name.
| Skull | When you get it | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| White | When you attack a player who has no skull. Lasts 15 minutes. | If you die with it, your gear wears down more. |
| Red | When you rack up 3 unjustified kills. | If you die, you lose EVERYTHING you carry. |
| Black | When you rack up 6 unjustified kills. | Same as red: you lose everything you carry and your gear wears down more. |
Every 24 hours one unjustified kill is forgiven. Killing players gives no experience, so PvP is for honor, for the war between the factions and for defending yourself.
Tip: if you do not want PvP, do not attack players without a skull. As in classic MMOs, if someone attacks you first, defending yourself does not give you a skull.
When you die in the world
Dying hurts less than in a classic MMO, and you almost never lose your things:
| What happens | How it works |
|---|---|
| Experience | You lose a part: 40% of what you would lose under the classic rule if a monster kills you, and 27% if a player does. |
| Your items | Not lost. The game puts your blessings on for you. The exception is a red or black skull: then you lose everything you carry. |
| Your gear wears down | Each equipped piece loses durability: 10 points if a monster kills you, 20 if a player does and 35 if a skulled killer does. At 0 it is damaged. |
| Talent tree | If you drop a level, points are returned from the branch, bottom to top. |
| Where you appear | At the temple of your home city. |
| When you die you see the “You are dead” window: it reminds you that your gear lost durability and that **a blacksmith can | |
| repair it**. Press Ok to return to the island. |
How to repair and how much it costs: Items.
When you die in a dungeon or the Rift
It is different, and gentler:
- You lose no experience, level or items. The death is cancelled and you go back to the temple.
- You do lose what you had not secured yet: the Essence and loot found in that run.
- Your gear with attributes has a 20% chance of losing one attribute (the protective seal prevents it).
- Your gear loses 5 points of durability.
- Your teammates carry on; you are out.
Tips to survive
- Watch the color of monsters: reds and oranges are dangerous (see Combat).
- Carry plenty of potions and drink before half health.
- In a dungeon, learn the boss warnings on the ground.
- If you do not want to fight, stay away from skulled players: they look for easy prey.
